Renee James: It hurts to watch economy worsen - October 3, 2008 - Pretend you're the chairman of a large public company. What's your next move if you close out your company's books on the first quarter and find that revenue has dropped 46 percent from just one year ago and you have operating costs of about $45 million?

Russo: McCain can't change record as a deregulator - September 26, 2008 - When Ronald Reagan became president in 1981, he did so with a call for reform and ''deregulation.'' Banks were deregulated, savings and loans were deregulated, airlines were deregulated -- just about everything was deregulated. We were told that markets knew best. A Republican named Phil Gramm was elected senator in Texas, and he led the charge in Congress for deregulation. One of Gramm's biggest fans was Sen. John McCain. And, when George W. Bush and Karl Rove entered the White House in 2001, they proceeded to do their best to carry on the Reagan legacy of deregulation.

Fostering wise savings will help economy - July 7, 2008 - President Truman once asked his staff to find him a one-armed economist. It must have bothered him that economic policy always has side effects. John Maynard Keynes left us with a model of how to deal with economic pneumonia, a massive depression, but Milton Friedman argued that things would have been nowhere as bad if, in the early 1930s, the federal Reserve would have acted with a little fortitude to maintain the money supply. Sadly, we don't seem to have sharp precise policies to assuage an economic cold, a recession or a skittering uncomfortable economy.

Coal must be part of nation's energy policy - September 14, 2008 - The home of many famous battlefields, from Valley Forge to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania once again finds itself at the center of a history-making fight -- the 2008 presidential election.
