Virginia organizers of Jamestown 2007, the celebration of the settlement's 400th anniversary, tried to express the spirit, imagination, and diversity of Americans through signature events, national and international festivities and community programs that showcase Virginia's unique role as the cradle of American democratic traditions. A highlight of events in Hampton Roads was a visit to Jamestown and Williamsburg by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.
