The Hollywood Police Department is one of Broward County's largest law enforcement agencies. The department provides law enforcement services to about 143,000 residents. More than 330 officers are split into a myriad of units including road patrol, marine patrol, criminal investigations, public safety aides and internal investigations. The Hollywood Police Department is one of Broward County's largest law enforcement agencies. The department provides law enforcement services to about 143,000 residents. More than 330 officers are split into a myriad of units including road patrol, marine patrol, criminal investigations, public safety aides and internal investigations. The Hollywood Police Department has its own communications section to provide 911 services. The department effectively was founded in 1925 when the city of Hollywood was created. Virgil White became the agency's first police chief. The Hollywood Police Department was accredited in 2002 by the Florida Commission for Law Enforcement Accreditation, which evaluates agencies' policies, procedures and facilities. Police Chief Chad Wagner was sworn in on Nov. 3, 2007. He reports to the Hollywood City Commission. The officers are represented by the Broward County Police Benevolent Association. Five police officers have died in the line of duty, including the 1926 murder of Officer Owen Coleman, the 1972 murder of Officer Henry Minard and the 1982 murder of Officer Frankie Shivers.
