In the U.S., most taverns are forbidden from selling alcoholic beverages to go and many have no smoking policies. Nightclubs became popular in the 1920s when people would go to see their favorite performers in an intimate setting. Dance clubs, featuring lighting and special effects, did not become popular until the disco craze in the 1970s. Most bars and clubs are open until early morning hours.
