Art Modell brought the Baltimore Ravens from Cleveland in 1996, and they won Super Bowl XXXV in 2001. The team name was the result of a Baltimore Sun telephone poll. On Nov. 6, 1995, the Cleveland Browns announced their intention to move to Baltimore for the 1996 season. The NFL approved the move, and Ted Marchibroda was named the team's first coach. With their first draft pick ever, the Ravens selected offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden out of UCLA. The Ravens then picked linebacker Ray Lewis out of Miami. Both are almost certain to be inducted into the Hall of Fame after they retire. The Ravens' first game was a win over the Oakland Raiders on Sept. 1, 1996, but they finished their inaugural season 4-12. In 1997, the Ravens played in Memorial Stadium for the last time. The following year, they played home games at a new stadium at Camden Yards, losing their first game to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Brian Billick was named the franchise's second head coach in 1999, arriving after working as offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. That same season, PSINet Stadium became the official name of the Ravens' home venue. In 2000, Steve Bisciotti purchased 49 percent of the franchise. The Ravens won three of their first four in 2000 before going 2-3 in October and failing to score a touchdown. However, the Ravens won their final seven games with Trent Dilfer at quarterback, and the team earned its first playoff berth. The Ravens' defense set an NFL record by allowing only 165 points in 16 games. Lewis was named the NFL's defensive Most Valuable Player by the Associated Press. Baltimore finished the season 12-4 and beat the Broncos, Titans and Raiders to advance to the Super Bowl. In Super Bowl XXXV, the Ravens beat the Giants, 34-7, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Fla. Lewis was named Super Bowl MVP. The following season, the Ravens advanced to the second round of the playoffs by beating the Miami Dolphins for their fifth straight playoff win. However, they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers to end the streak. In 2003, Ozzie Newsome was named the Ravens general manager, making him the first minority GM in the NFL. That same year, the stadium was renamed M&T Bank Stadium after a 15-year, $75 million agreement. Running back Jamal Lewis ran for 2,066 yards that season, making him the fifth player in NFL history to reach the 2,000-yard mark. The NFL approved Bisciotti's purchase of the team in 2004. The team holds training camp at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. The Ravens practice at a facility in Owings Mills.
